Digital transformation is no longer optional for Singapore SMEs. With changing customer expectations, rising operational costs, and global competition, businesses must adopt digital tools to stay relevant. The Singapore government recognises this need and introduced the Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG) to help SMEs offset the costs of digital adoption, subject to current eligibility rules and Enterprise Singapore's approval.
Among the wide range of PSG-supported solutions, AI chatbots are a commonly chosen starting point because they are customer-facing from day one. This guide covers what to check before you commit, who this isn't a fit for, and how the application actually works, alongside our dedicated PSG Funding page.
The PSG provides SMEs with up to 50% funding support for pre-approved IT solutions, equipment and consultancy services. Its goal is simple: help SMEs modernise operations without overwhelming financial strain. From accounting software to HR systems, the PSG covers a wide spectrum of tools. Yet many SMEs struggle with one question: where should we begin? The answer is clear: start with solutions that directly impact customers and revenue. That's where AI chatbots shine.
Unlike backend systems, chatbots immediately touch your customers. They greet visitors, answer enquiries, and route leads from the first day of deployment, so the impact is visible to your team quickly, even if the size of that impact still depends on your own enquiry volume and how well the bot is trained.
Without grants, some SMEs hesitate to invest in automation. With PSG funding, the cost of deploying an AI chatbot becomes accessible even for small businesses, removing financial risk and encouraging adoption.
AI chatbots aren't just entry-level tools. As SMEs grow, chatbots can integrate with CRMs, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and e-commerce platforms, ensuring your first PSG-funded tool continues to deliver value as your business expands.
Chatbots don't just talk. They collect data. By analysing customer questions, behaviour and trends, SMEs gain valuable insights to guide future PSG-funded investments like CRM upgrades or marketing automation.
"It's too complicated." PSG-approved chatbots are designed for SMEs, with user-friendly dashboards and vendor support. "Will customers like talking to a bot?" Modern AI chatbots use natural language processing, making conversations human-like and engaging. "Will it replace my staff?" No, chatbots complement staff by handling repetitive tasks, freeing employees for higher-value work.
A PSG-supported chatbot isn't the right first move for every SME. If your business doesn't yet have documented FAQs, pricing or a consistent set of answers to common customer questions, spend a few weeks writing those down first, the chatbot can only be as good as what it's trained on. If your enquiry volume is very low (a handful of messages a week), the cost of setup may not be justified yet. And if you're not currently able to have someone review the bot's answers in the first few weeks, hold off until you can, an unreviewed chatbot risks giving customers a wrong answer with nobody catching it.
Within weeks of approval, your SME can start using a chatbot, with government support (where approved) covering part of the cost. Confirm current rates and rules on the PSG Funding page or the official GoBusiness listing before you apply.
